Travel clothes have one requirement: they have to survive four hours of sitting and still be acceptable at the other end. Merino and dry denim both do. Linen and light chinos do not.

The mac is the piece that makes this work in both directions — over a jumper it is a coat, over a jacket it is still a coat.

Why it works

• Charcoal on charcoal on black. It cannot look creased because it barely shows shadow.
• Nothing here needs a hanger on arrival.
• The holdall is the only warm colour, which is why it reads as luggage rather than as kit.
